“Mother” – 120cm x 180cm
This painting by sculptor Robyn Burton is a homage to her mother. In a style influenced by the playful eccentric nature of Greyson Perry and the strong bold nature of influential feminist painter Frida Kahlo, Robyn speaks of her mother and their relationship through the use of particular skills and presentation. Using house paint and techniques such as under-painting, Robyn gifts this painting an air of transparency, everyday normality and a bit of fragility. In stark contrast to this, the street art styled black lettering that demands the viewer’s attention, is extracted from an interview held with the artist’s mother prior to the painting being made. It conveys a new sense of self ownership, of rising above, learning, growing and strengthening from the past.
